Many big-name retailers have pledged to bring some manufacturing back to the U.S., but experts have questioned the sincerity of the claims. Now a recent study has found that the industry is indeed returning to some local production. Apparel was one of the top three industries to “reshore,” or move manufacturing to the U.S., in 2014, according to the 2014 Reshoring Index, released Monday by management consulting company A.T. Kearney.

“It’s somewhat unexpected,” said Pramod Gupta, a principal in the strategic operations practice at A.T. Kearney. “If you think about the apparel industry, it’s a particularly highly labor-intensive operation.” He noted that apparel makes up 12% of the 700 cases of reshoring tracked since 2010.
